Here’s a great gift idea for the DIYer, artist, crafter, OR musician. I received this Make Your Own Ukulele Kit from UncommonGoods and knew exactly what I wanted to do to it right away. I was also pretty excited to have a fun project to complete over the weekend that didn’t involve work related things!
The kit comes in a pretty blue box like this, with all of the pieces you need to create your own custom ukulele. You will need a few of your own tools, like a small screwdriver and glue.
Before doing any of the assembly, I decided to paint the base. This part is the most fun because you can really do anything you want to it. If you’re not a painter, you could even stain it, cover it in Washi tape, or even do a little decoupage work. I decided to go with some florals, because really what screams “ukulele” like some florals…
I’m not going to lie, I did curse a few times putting this thing together. Not that it was difficult at all, but there were just minor annoyances with the fact that most everything is glued on and I was too impatient to wait for it to completely dry. The instructions weren’t that clear in that the pieces needed to be glued on either, and I found some differences with the instructions vs. reality (spacing measurements) but in the end, I used my brain, found some patience, and it all worked out. Just don’t ask me to string a guitar for you in the future.
I’ll be using this little instrument as a decor piece I think. You can play it, but I have zero skills in that area so I was more concerned with it looking pretty.
I’d recommend this cute little kit to anyone who just wants a fun and totally unique project to do! You can pick one up from UncommonGoods and check out their other personalized gifts while you’re there! (Check out the Pick Punch. I bought one for Dustin last year and he uses it constantly!)
If you’re unfamiliar with UncommonGoods, they are a privately-owned retailer that features unique designs and handcrafted gifts with the environment in mind and without harm to animals or people. They make it their mission to support and provide a platform for artists and designers; in fact, half of what they sell is made by hand and about one-third of their entire collection incorporates recycled and/or upcycled materials. With every purchase you make, they donate $1 to the non-profit of your choice. They’ve already donated over $700,000 to charities around the world! If that doesn’t make you feel good about buying some Christmas gifts from them I don’t know what will!
What would you do to your own custom ukulele?
The ukulele kit was provided to me from UncommonGoods. The project review is entirely my own opinion.
